Artist Deirdre O'Mahony, Cork

I live in Cork and my surroundings are the basis of my paintings. I love going for walks and capturing moments in time on the camera which I then attempt to put on the canvas. I'm new to painting having taken up lessons in September 2017. I had studied art for the leaving certificate many moons ago and had not painted since. I needed a new mindfulness outlet to help deal with the stresses of work in the education sector and decided it was time to investigate whether the talent I had at 17 was still there. I surprised myself at still being able to paint and I've so enjoyed experimenting with different topics and genres. I have winter and summer beach scenes, evoking the times of this year.

The stormy weather after the big snow in March on the Kerry beaches, and the fantastic hot sunny summer on the Cork beaches. I love the city scapes, the quays, the bridges, the wonderful buildings all around Cork City. I'm particularly interested in the older less known buildings. Even a shabby quay like Georges Quay opposite the far more illustrious Holy Trinity Church can look bright, colourful and inviting in the correct light. The old Fire station on Sullivan's Quay is ofter overlooked as the St Finbarres cathedral has far better marketing. I like catching these buildings in a poor light and creating a far brighter happier version on the canvas. Stormy grey clouds are never grey to me- I see the purples, greens, blues and pinks that are there and capture them. My next plan is to start branching out into oils and watercolours...
